Disassembly of Prefabricated Units

Students from the Architecture – Green Building and Sustainable Resource Management programs participated in this hands-on experience as part of the MA23-funded project “[Bau]kasten.” We discovered that adhesives should be avoided and that timber construction, when well-planned, offers excellent sustainable solutions. This workshop highlights our commitment to resource-efficient architecture and innovative building practices.

Progress on Our Facade

Works on the facade of our Green.Building.LAB has officially started! We’re using Tricoya for its durability and moisture resistance. Additionally, we’re incorporating a green roof that will contribute to biodiversity and improve insulation.

The overall design aims to create a sustainable and inviting exterior that reflects our commitment to innovative building practices.

Exploring Hygrothermal Effects

As part of our commitment to innovative building practices, we are excited to investigate the hygrothermal effects of our wall systems using different insulation materials, including wood fiber, straw, and mineral wool. To facilitate this research, we have integrated sensors into our wall systems to monitor performance over the long term. This data will provide valuable insights into how each insulation material behaves in various environmental conditions, helping us optimize our designs for sustainability and efficiency.

We recently welcomed a delegation from UHasselt and their research group SuRE for an inspiring visit. Together, we explored potential collaborations focused on design for disassembly and reuse in timber construction

A Warm Welcome to Our Partners

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a visit from our partner, Schrenk, along with myBlock and WoodRocks. A group of 40 employees joined us for a tour of our Green.Building.LAB, where they explored how we have integrated their innovative prefabricated bathroom unit into our project.

Green.Building.LAB Assembly Underway

From May 13th to 27th, our students were hands-on, assembling the components of our Green.Building.LAB in collaboration with datab. The project embodies the future of sustainable architecture, using generative design principles tailored for manufacturing, assembly, and disassembly—making it perfect for reuse! Each part is crafted to fit together seamlessly, demonstrating a commitment to circular construction and eco-friendly practices.

Hands-On Workshop with timber

As part of the “Design 6” course in the Bachelor’s program in Architecture – Green Building, students constructed a mock-up to promote hands-on learning. They designed and produced a technical module that integrated complex requirements, such as accessibility and moisture protection. Working in groups facilitated intensive exchange and the development of solutions for design and implementation challenges.

Welcome to the team!

Since March, Andrea Rieger-Jandl has been leading the Master’s program in Architecture – Green Building. With a background in architecture and anthropology, including studies in the U.S. and a habilitation in cross-cultural architectural history, she promotes hands-on experience and interdisciplinary collaboration. In addition to her leadership role, she teaches at the Institute for Art History, Building Research, and Conservation at TU Wien.

Technik bewegt

The event technik bewegt, organized with the association bink, offered around 100 students from the 8th grade and above insights into architecture, urban planning, and construction technology. The participants engaged in hands-on workshops, constructing paper bridges and designing shared living spaces. The day was rounded off with an exhibition showcasing architectural models and printed concrete elements, providing a creative and interactive experience for the students.

Trip to Switzerland

Last week, our colleague Aída visited Switzerland to engage with universities and industry partners, including the infrastructures of the Joint Masters of Architecture (JMA) in Geneva and Fribourg. Key discussions were held, which emphasizes a material-based approach using fibers, wood, and earth. The visit facilitated knowledge exchange and strengthened collaborative ties between academic and industry stakeholders in sustainable architecture.

Our colleague had the honor of contributing to the official release of Spain’s very first report on the state of industrialized timber construction! This landmark report provides in-depth insights into the current trends, growth areas, and challenges within the timber construction sector in Spain, highlighting its impact on sustainable building practices and innovation in the industry.

Visit from Berner FH

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming colleagues from Bern University of Applied Sciences, who visited Vienna as part of the CAS in Sustainable Construction program. We took the opportunity to present our activities in teaching and research and exchange ideas on innovative approaches. The focus was on architecture in the context of social aspects, as well as sustainable solutions to address the climate and ecological crisis and to implement the Energy Strategy 2050.

RothoSchool on Tour

Yesterday, we held a seminar at FH Campus Wien in collaboration with Rothoblaas titled “Timber Construction – Challenges, Solutions, and Research Advances.” The seminar was specifically tailored to the needs of (structural) planners and architects looking to deepen their knowledge of timber construction. This first Rothoschool on Tour in Vienna primarily focused on exchanging experiences from various perspectives within the field of timber construction.

Two of our colleagues attended the World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE) in Oslo this week, where each had the opportunity to present a research project currently conducted at FH Campus Wien to a broad international audience of experts.
